I like the 'penny drop' moments, there will be many of them over a lifetime but not many (if any) writing-life changing events. I found someone who knows what he is talking about and had a writing-life changing experience and I'm currently rereading the book. It's called 'On Film-making: An Introduction To The Craft of the Director by Alexander Mackendrick" Don't be put off by the title, if you have ever struggled not with 'what' but 'why' then this is the book for you. That and really learning the art of Edit will help more than any other book, advice or training - well, it did for me.

I've just been whipping through the first three seasons of LOST and started watching 'The Reader' just now.
I laughed out loud about the truth of this insight into secrecy and the nature of character.
Nearly every episode of LOST hinges on that exact issue! anyway...just my 2 cents

I'm full steam ahead brother Neil; a holiday weekend re-plotting and restructuring has cleared the deadwood. I won't tell you how many words I've trashed: I might cry if I think about it too much.

I thought the same. Did you find this fascinating quotation in the book as well?
One can spend years in interesting research over these words. I'd give a lot to find out who first uttered them.

Hi, thanks for the review. Actually, the book didn't start as a Powerpoint or blog, but I wanted it to be something that you could dip into for a bite-sized bit of stimulation, something that is appealing visually too since most creative people are visually oriented. I go into things in much more depth in my other book, "Focus: the power of targeted thinking." That one is the full meal, this one is a bunch of (good, I hope) snacks. Well, I have to go water my cactus now--It only needs it once a year, so I have lots of time for being creative :-)
